How does Australia compare to other rich countries on the SDGs?

Compare Australia with the other wealthy countries on a few Sustainable Development Goal measures — air quality, how much material the country gets through, young people out of work and study, and women in parliament.

It depends entirely which goal you pick. Australia has the 8th lowest fine-particle pollution of 38 OECD members and the 4th highest share of women in parliament, but consumes 48 tonnes of material per person a year — 2.8 times the median. On young people out of work it is unremarkable.

1. Eighth lowest fine-particle pollution in the OECD, by two hundredths of a microgram

Australia's 6.2 micrograms per cubic metre is 8th lowest in the OECD, well under the median of 8.9 and a third of what South Korea, Türkiye or Chile breathe. The seven cleaner than Australia are Finland, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Iceland, New Zealand and Portugal — not one profile but several. Portugal is 6.208 against Australia's 6.226, so seventh and eighth are two hundredths of a microgram apart. It is still above the World Health Organization's guideline of 5, which only Finland and Sweden meet among the 38. Nothing in this series separates geography from policy, and it measures one pollutant: rankings on ozone or nitrogen dioxide would differ.

2. And fourth-highest domestic material consumption in the OECD

counts everything extracted or imported and used inside the country — ore, coal, crops, sand. Australia gets through 48 tonnes a person, 4th highest of the 36 members with usable figures and 2.8 times the median of 17.1, behind Mexico, Canada and Chile. Exports are netted off, not counted: the measure is domestic extraction plus imports less exports, so the iron ore and coal that leave the country are already subtracted and Australia's domestic extraction per person is larger still.

At 46 per cent Australia is 4th of 38, above every G7 country and above the median of 35.3. Only Mexico, Costa Rica and Iceland sit higher — and Iceland by three hundredths of a point. Australia reached this position in two elections: in 2016 it was 21st of 38, on 26.67 per cent against a median of 27.86.

4. Unremarkable on young people, and low on aid

On the share of 15 to 24 year olds neither working nor Australia is 14th of 33 at 8.5 per cent, just better than the median of 9.9 and a long way behind Iceland and the Netherlands. Australia also sits low on as a share of national income, 29th of the 42 donors reporting for 2025, which is not charted here because it has its own page. What to watch for

  • The comparison set is the 38 members of the OECD, which is a workable stand-in for 'other rich countries' but includes Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile and Türkiye, whose incomes are well below Australia's. Where they sit at one end of a chart, that is what is doing it.
  • Not every indicator covers every member. Air quality and parliamentary representation cover all 38; young people out of work covers 33; material consumption covers 36 of the 38 after two are dropped.
  • Japan and New Zealand are omitted from the material consumption chart because the database reports them at or just below zero tonnes per person, for every year from 2019 to 2022. A country cannot consume a negative quantity of material, so those figures are wrong rather than low, and charting them would put two false points at the bottom of the ranking.
  • Each of these series is compiled by an international agency to one standard, which is what makes the comparison valid. The Australian figure in each chart will therefore differ from the ABS or Australian agency figure for the same concept: the harmonised series is the right one for ranking countries and the domestic series is the right one for stating the Australian fact.
  • The reference line on each chart is the median of the countries shown, not an OECD average. A mean of national rates is not the rate of any population, and the median is used here only to mark the middle of the distribution. Each median is an Aard calculation over the members in that response, and the evidence record for each chart carries every one of them with its position, so both the median and Australia's rank can be checked.
  • Two of these four ranks turn on less than the page rounds to. Portugal is 6.208 micrograms and Australia 6.226; Iceland is 46.03 per cent and Australia 46.00. A rank is a useful summary and a brittle one, and a revision of a hundredth would move either of them.
  • The four indicators are not all the same kind of number, and one chart mixes two kinds within itself. Every air-quality observation is a WHO estimate, while the material-consumption ranking sets 26 country-reported figures against 10 estimated ones, Australia's among the estimated. Parliamentary representation and the youth series are country data.
  • Reference years differ by indicator because the custodians publish on different cycles: air quality is 2023, material consumption 2022, young people 2024 and parliamentary representation at 1 January 2026. No chart mixes years within itself.
  • Mexico's material-consumption figure sets the top of that chart's scale and sits on an unstable series: the same vintage gives it 12.3 tonnes a person in 2010, 40.4 in 2019 and 101.2 in 2020, a two-and-a-half-fold rise in the pandemic year when throughput fell almost everywhere. The page screens the bottom of this ranking for impossible values and does not screen the top. Australia's rank and the median do not depend on Mexico.

THE SELECTION NEEDS Type of product=ALP, all products: the call returns seven product types per country and Australia's metal-ores figure alone is 16.328, which would rank it quite differently. Japan (-0.025) and New Zealand (-0.348) are dropped because the response reports them below zero tonnes per person, which cannot be a quantity of material consumed. THE RANKING MIXES TWO PROVENANCES: 26 of the 36 charted countries are Nature=C, country-reported, and 10 are Nature=E, estimated — Australia, Canada, Chile and Mexico among the estimated, Finland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands among the reported. An earlier version of this note said every observation was estimated, which hid that. Mexico's 128.226 also sits on a series that runs 12.27 in 2010, 40.42 in 2019 and 101.15 in 2020, a two-and-a-half-fold rise in the pandemic year; Australia's rank and the median do not depend on it, but it sets the top of the chart's scale. 36 of the 38 OECD members.
